Jackson Park PTO

Meeting Minutes

September 14, 2010

I.    Welcome and introductions of attendees-The meeting was called to order at 7:08 by outgoing president, Karin McElwain-West. She welcomed all to the first PTO meeting of the year and introduced officers and committee chairs who were present.

II.   School Board Liaison - Bob Elgin

• MAP improvements at Jackson Park.
• Public forum on redistricting, October 18, 6:00 at McNair. The current plan is to add a large part of Nathaniel Hawthorne School to Jackson Park. There is a map available on the district’s website showing the old and new boundaries. Public comments are welcome.
• School district remains fully accredited. District leaders meet regularly with DESE and they feel that the district is moving in the right direction.

III. Principal’s Report - Dr. Christine Powers

• positive start to school year
• everyone showing a positive attitude
• Dr. Powers stated she feels very happy with how things are progressing
• Still using PBIS (positive behavioral interventions and supports) as the school-wide behavior management system
• Continuing collaboration among the teachers for academics

IV. MAP Scores presented by Dr. Powers

• MAP scores showed improvement – used Safe Harbor Provision (moved 10% of the lowest groups into proficient range)

V. Treasurer’s report - Sharon Beatty

• Sharon went over monies raised and expenses

VI. Election of officers – Slate presented included the Vice President, Treasurer and At-Large Member. President and Secretary were nominated from the floor. Final slate was approved unanimously.

VII. Old Business

a.   JP Wearables - orders due Sept. 15^th and merchandise will be back in time for homecoming

b.   Science Night - Wed, Sept.15th 6:00 pm in the Cafeteria (PTO pays for this event, but teachers organize and run it)

c.   Doughnuts with Dads - Oct. 7; Muffins with Mom Oct. 21 (either parent, grandparent, guardian, etc. can come to either) 7:00 am in the cafeteria

d.   Committee Chairs: All committee chairs have been successfully filled!

VIII. New Business

a.   Planning for the year - ideas for PTO meeting speakers:

• Beverly Brandt, healthy eating;
• Terry Ross, Flynn Park Parent, or Nancy McCartney, UCity Parks and Rec, on possible assistance with grants for re-doing JP playground (Kaboom! or Home Depot grants, UCCC had success with this program)
• Superintendent
• Parental involvement – how to reach out to get more parents involved

b.   Book Fair Oct 12-16th, around Homecoming

c.   Trivia Night - tentative date April 8th, Laura Chisolm Chairing, last year raised $3,100!

IX.  Adjournment – Joycelyn Barnes moved and Stacy Tate seconded the motion to adjourn

Next meeting Oct. 12th, approving 2010-2011 budget.  A planning meeting will be held prior to this.
