It is that time of year again. Snow and school closings.

The School District of University City uses several methods to notify parents and staff of inclement weather closings, including SchoolReach calls to student and staff homes, television news stations (Channels 2, 4 and 5), radio (KMOX) and postings to the District website (www.ucityschools.org) and Facebook page. In most cases, the decision to close schools is made by 5 AM and notifications are broadcast beginning at 5:30 AM to ensure all staff and students receive adequate notice of cancellations.

snowy busIn determining an inclement weather day due to snow/ice, District administration considers these factors:

  • The ability of buses to navigate not only main thoroughfares, but also side streets and neighborhoods that may have more snow or ice than major streets.
  • The condition of area sidewalks and streets, since many students walk to school. If sidewalks are covered in snow or ice, students who walk may be forced to walk in the street, which puts them at greater risk.
  • The temperature as related to students waiting at a bus stop or walking to school.
  • The impact on attendance that results from inclement weather conditions if school remains in session.

To help ensure school cancellation notices reach all students and staff, please verify that your child's school has a current phone number on file at all times. The automated call system uses the parent/guardian's primary phone number provided at the time of enrollment. Parents who wish to receive phone calls on a different number should contact their child's school office and request that their primary phone number be changed to the preferred number.

The Jackson Park Number is 290-4450.
